In her role as Digital Communications Coordinator, Kirsten manages the social media platforms, designs graphics, and serves as the liaison to the advocacy team. Kirsten joined the Alliance for the Great Lakes in 2019 and brings a powerful set of writing and design skills along with a string instinct for digital engagement. Kirsten approaches content from a people-first perspective. She loves finding new ways to engage audiences, whether it is a blog post, infographic, or fun personality quiz.
Kirsten comes to the organization from the News Media Alliance, a trade organization advocating for news publishers, where she served as the Content and Social Media Editor. While at News Media Alliance, she launched a Rising Star award for journalists, coordinated the #SupportRealNews campaign, and wrote about how small newsrooms could produce large, meaningful stories in the digital era. Kirsten started her career as a features reporter in Goldsboro, North Carolina, where she covered everything from a cat retirement party to the Wings Over Wayne air show. She received her bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass communication from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill with a minor in creative writing. Kirsten received a certificate in visual design from General Assembly.
