Fourth Graders Take on 57th Street Beach in Chicago

University of Chicago Lab School Does Adopt-a-Beach

June 4, 2019

This Earth Day, fourth graders at University of Chicago Lab School took on cleanup efforts at 57th Street Beach in Hyde Park. Nearly 100 Lab students are becoming Adopt-a-Beach volunteers this year. While many students had been to 57th Street Beach before, the cleanup experience was a first.

Teacher Michelle Holmes was also new to Adopt-a-Beach, and she already has a vision for how to expand her students’ impact while incorporating cleanups into lesson plans in the future.

Holmes plans to do a series of cleanups with her students next year, and use the litter data they collect for an in-class analysis project. We’re so inspired by these young Great Lakes leaders, and we can’t wait to see this effort grow!

Love the Lakes?

Michelle, her fourth grade class, and thousands of other amazing volunteers care for Great Lakes beaches every year. Join their ranks!
