Media Statement: President Should Put Words into Action and Fully Fund Great Lakes Programs in FY21 Budget

January 31, 2020

January 31, 2020 (Chicago, IL) – Yesterday, at an event in Warren, Michigan, President Trump expressed support for Great Lakes protection efforts, and specifically committed to move quickly to build a proposed project to keep invasive Asian carp out of the Great Lakes. (Find video of the remarks here.) In reaction, Alliance for the Great Lakes Vice President for Policy Molly Flanagan made the following statement:

“While we appreciate the President’s support for the construction project to keep invasive Asian carp out of the Great Lakes, we can’t help but be skeptical. The President’s past actions have not been supportive of Great Lakes protection programs. In fact, each of President Trump’s prior budgets have proposed extreme cuts to these programs.

We encourage President Trump to turn his words into action when he releases his FY21 budget in a few weeks and include full funding for Asian carp protection efforts and other critical Great Lakes funding programs.”
